Entrepreneurs have a tough road – there are multiple ups and downs regarding growth, fundraising and overall success. The typical entrepreneurs day looks like this:
But being a mom entrepreneur, particularly in the tech world, is even harder. Take the craziness of normal entrepreneur life, and layer on top of it a few screaming children, piles of laundry, class projects and swim meets. Mom typically does the lions share of childcare regardless of whether she has a career or not. So when a mom is trying to launch a tech company while also trying to be CHO (Chief Household Officer), life gets downright messy.
A fellow mom in tech told us her story recently – “Catherine” had an appointment (for the second morning in a row) with a guy from a large local tech company to try and form a strategic partnership. He set the time for 8am, which invariably made Catherine have to move heaven and earth to juggle all things family and still make the meeting in time – early sitter, get kids set for school – and he canceled at midnight the night before. “OK – at least I got a note when I woke up” she thought. However, the note also read, “can we do it same time tomorrow?”. ” Sure” thought Catherine, cursing to herself. She emailed him late that night to confirm. She then proceeded to setup the sitter to come early and rearranged her day so she could get home early so she didn’t have to pay the nanny extra. She then got the kids dressed early that morning while one was sick and weepy, making her feel once again like a horrible mom for leaving. Her husband was also out of town so she was on her own. She finally got in the car at 6:45 for her nearly 90 minute drive to make her 8am meeting, only to get an email alert on her phone to say…the meeting is canceled – again.
