On Election Day, we provided childcare at the City of Pittsburgh office building in Downtown Pittsburgh. We did this so parents who had children off of school didn’t have to take time off if they didn’t want to. It was an amazing experience: the children sat at Mayor Peduto’s desk, and pretended like they were signing legislature; there was an adorable Golden Retriever named River who is the resident Office Dog; and of course, lots of games and fun.
This is why we do what we do: We believe in lowering barriers across the board, for both parents and their employers. There are numerous companies that believe in providing family benefits, whether that’s through a flexible work week, maternity as well as paternity leave, or having a gym on-site. Childcare, however, is the missing piece of these family benefits. Often, companies will entertain the idea of providing childcare, but then back away due to the barriers of insurance, liability, hiring caregivers, and dedicating a space with toys for children. With Flexable, these barriers are no longer an issue: We have the insurance, we provide the caregivers, and we provide the toys and games. If there’s an open space in the office, we make it work.
Furthermore, parents shouldn’t have to use their Paid Time Off days or Sick Leave in order to care for their children. That’s not fair. Time off should be spent doing something enjoyable, not because a child’s school closed for reasons beyond parental control. By providing childcare at the office, we are able to help parents go to work and they have the added bonus of knowing that their children are well-cared for. Also, these parents feel valued by their employers, and as we all know, when one feels valued, one is more productive.
One of the City of Pittsburgh employees writes:
“Recently, my employer offered pop-up childcare for free on a day that the schools were closed but employees had to report to work. A fabulous idea because my 7 yr-old son stays with his grandmother after school for an hour, and does not attend regular day care. Because we don’t attend regular daycare anymore, we don’t have a spot and I would normally need to take the day off and stay home with him. Using Flexable allowed me to report to work and spend some extra special time with my son as well. He also had a blast and did not want to leave because he was having so much fun. The caregivers are excellent and really keep the kids engaged in activities.”
We are grateful for the opportunity presented to us by the City of Pittsburgh. Our City values families, and they want to lower barriers to provide access to childcare for the parents that they employ. We will continue to push for #childcareeverywhere, and to support working parents as well as employers by providing this missing piece in family benefits.
